Zitelle Church

The Santa Maria della Presentazione Church is more commonly know in Venice with the nickname of “Chiesa delle Zitelle” (church of the young maidens). Its name comes from the fact that in the past it was part of a vast ecclesiastic complex that helped young girls who were too poor to get a dowry, which often faced a destiny of prostitution to survive. At the time, the practice was allowed by the Republic and the noblemen of Venice.

Nowadays, the church can be visited in the eastern part of the Giudecca Island. The old hospice surrounds it on three sides, creating a small courtyard within. In the building are guarded artworks by Aliense, Leandro Bassano and Palma il Giovane.
