San Polo: Ice-skating

Christmas is drawing near, and with it the city of Venice has started to offer its visitors and inhabitants various outdoor activities to fully enjoy the holidays. Among these there is the huge ice-skating rink that has opened in Campo San Polo just like every year.

From the December 3rd you will have the possibility to skate of the large ice rink, found in the middle of the old city centre. It’s the perfect place where to spend a relaxing day out with your family while visiting Venice, or just a brief stop to take when you are visiting it with your friends. You will be able to ice skate up until February 17th, date that marks the end of the Carnival period.

Remember to visit also the surrounding Christmas markets that are only available during this period of the year. We highly recommend to take a hot chocolate to drink even just to take a pause from all the tiring ice-skating!

If you want to ice-skate in the picturesque city of Venice, remember to book the room for your stay with Albergo Marin!

Carnival of Venice 2013

The Carnival celebrations last ten days and begin 10 days before the Tuesday of Carnival. Carnival is a festival in the Veneto but no doubt the activities that take place in Venice are the most famous.
Originally, Carnival lasted two months and it was the time when everything was allowed. The celebrations were masked to avoid consequences. Decayed much in the eighteenth century, but it will eventually regained his favor.
Masks and disguises play a key role in this anonymous world, class divisions disappear, all are equal because they barely knows who is behind the mask. The participants take the opportunity to parade through the streets and making jokes.
You need to book well in advance as in the months before the Carnival rooms are full!

Giardino Sonoro: an experiment related to the concept of ecologically sound

At the Giardino delle Vergini of the Arsenal, for the opening of the 56th International Festival of Contemporary Music by the Venice Biennale, it was organized the Giardino Sonoro, an interesting experiment related to the concept of ecologically sound. The garden will be open thanks to the Biennale Architettura ticket and individual tickets for performances of the Biennale Musica.

The Giardino Sonoro, where space model sounds or sounds makes space model, is designed by a team of specialists – architects, designers, engineers, planners, technology integrators – led by Lorenzo Brusci and Simone Conforti, gathered under the name of Architettura Sonora and since 2009 working in the department for research established by a leader company in the world of speakers.

The project developed by them, called Automatic Soundscape Generation (ASG), was created in order to retrain all those environments that are disfigured by noise.

Enrico Castellani and Günther Uecker at Ca’ Pesaro

Ca’ Pesaro, International Gallery of Modern Art
From September 1st 2012 to January 13th 2013

Two big masters of Contemporary Art, eminent representatives of the last generation of Gruppo Zero, never presented together in a museum exhibition, Günther Uecker / Enrico Castellani meet again after fifty years in this show organized in the prestigious space of Cà Pesaro, International Gallery of Modern Art in Venice. The exhibition proposes a selection of some of the most important historical works together with more recent ones.

Co-produced by Fondazione Musei Civici, Venice and Fondazione Mudima, Milan, curated by Davide Di Maggio and Lóránd Hegyi, the exhibition proposes a particular comparison between two different artistic contexts, the Italian and the German one: two models of a systematic, conceptual and sensorial art.

Enrico Castellani exposes about twenty works among the most revealing and important of his career up to some most recent works. As many works will be presented by Günther Uecker, dated since 1960.

Two books edited for the exhibition, one for each artist, published by Fondazione Mudima in Milan and Fondazione Musei Civici in Venice will be presented at the opening.

Hotel Marin is very close to Ca’ Pesaro, why should you miss an important event such as this exhibition?

Venezia in piazza – Snapshots of an Italian story 1866-2011

The exhibition, already set up last year at Villa Hériot in honor of the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy, is part of the initiatives of the Festival Città Viva (Venice, 28th September to 7th October 2012), sponsored by the “Patto Città Consapevole”.
The exhibition, curated by the Archives of the Communication of the City of Venice and by Iveser, is organized in collaboration with the health department and the administrative direction of the San Raffaele Arcangelo Hospital (Fatebenefratelli) of Venice. The exhibition proposes reproductions of important photographs – from prestigious Venetian archives – of historical events which took place in Piazza San Marco, but also in Piazza Ferretto, between nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The square is represented here in its complex and varied land uses, as the vital center of the collective identity but also, and more specifically, the place where the sense of community and institutional power shows its strength and its symbols.

The exhibition will be open until October 28th 2012 from 8 to 20 and Sestiere Cannaregio is very close to Albergo Marin!

Venice Marathon 2012

The countdown starts to the 27th edition of the 28th of October, but at home Venice Marathon record is already registered. 8.000 will be the starters this year, 1.000 more than the previous edition.

The marathon of Venice is a race that takes place annually in October over the classic distance of the marathon: 42.195 km departing from Stra and arriving in Venice.
The Venice Marathon was the first marathon recognized by the Italian Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS) and included in the international calendar of the IAAF. The Venice Marathon is sponsored by the Venice Casino.
The departure is from Stra, a village near Padua, famous for the beautiful Villa Pisani, the route then winds through the villages of Fiesso d’Artico, Dolo and Mira, on the Riviera del Brenta famous for its beautiful villas and thus comes to Mestre where, after passing through the city, racers start to cross the Ponte della Libertà that leads to Venice. The runners have to cross several bridges over the canals of Venice, until the crossing of the Grand Canal from the Punta della Salute in San Marco, on a pontoon bridge built specially for the occasion. The arrival is placed in Riva Sette Martiri. Only in 2011, for the first time the race has passed through Piazza San Marco.

Do not miss the event!

“Francesco Guardi, 1712 – 1793”

Museo Correr
From September 29th 2012 to January 6th 2013

Curated by Alberto Craievich and Filippo Pedrocco, under the scientific direction of Gabriella Belli, the exhibition – under the High Patronage of the President of the Italian Republic – is mounted in the exhibition rooms of the Correr Museum from 28 September 2012 to 6 January 2013. It is divided into five different sections that cover Francesco’s artistic development whilst also documenting the different genres he worked on.

The itinerary is both chronological and thematic, comprising seventy paintings and the same number of drawings that were chosen on the basis of their qualitative and historical value. They are part of a much vaster and heterogeneous corpus that ranges from lesser known early figures, inspired by costume painting, religious paintings and early views, landscapes and capriccios, in which his originality compared to other Venetian painters stands out with his immortalisation of Venetian celebrations and ceremonies, up to the splendid views of Venice during his later works in which his highly personal style became increasingly free and allusive.
